DeepSeek moves twice in one release

DeepSeek released V4.1-Flash — 552B mixture-of-experts, a million-token context, MIT-licensed weights — verified against the model card. It came with a pricing double move: Pro traffic rerouted to the new model, and peak-hour prices doubled. Alongside it, Magic claims a pretraining recipe roughly 50x more compute-efficient than V4 Pro's — the company's claim, at research-update stage. And Ornn's paper argues open-weight demand extends the earning life of older GPUs, a direct attack on the depreciation assumption underneath the bear case.

The agents get payment rails and bank desks

Ant International signed Visa and Mastercard onto a common standard for AI-agent payments — the rails incumbents joining rather than resisting. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Financial Services with Morgan Stanley and Evercore as design partners. Microsoft previewed an AI converter for migrating Salesforce customers to Dynamics — an acquisition tool aimed at a rival's installed base, in public. And Cognition claims SWE-2 sits within a point of Fable 5.1 at 64% lower cost — its own benchmark run, a day after its US$48bn raise.

The safety argument sharpens on both ends

Anthropic's fourth threat report covers seven harm areas and one Fable-class misuse case, and the Anthropic Institute published an RSI progress essay beside an economic scenario model — the lab documenting its own approach to the thing its critics warn about. An alignment essay proposes agents that would rather press their own off switch — built on DeepMind's specification-gaming catalogue. An SMH op-ed likened AI development to kids playing with a nuclear warhead. And Buckmaster escalated the Navier–Stokes dispute, claiming OpenAI's own training data foreshadowed the unforced Euler result — his claim, publicly made, unresolved.

Taiwan odds, memory records, state rules

The SMH reports Kevin Rudd putting one-in-three odds on China moving on Taiwan by 2028 — as reported, with the provenance caveat carried. The supply chain those odds hang over: TSMC's August revenue hit a record NT$514.8bn, up 53% year on year, CXMT says LPDDR6 is in mass production and debuts in Xiaomi's 18 Fold, and Bloomberg reports an Indian firm ordering 9,000 Vera Rubin systems with an ambition to export tokens. In the states, Massachusetts issued EO 658 on data-centre development and ratepayer protection.

What stays human

Mathematicians launched the Association for Human Mathematics — a manifesto, and the institutional form of the unease Tao named last week. Three essays converged on trust, restraint and taste as the post-AI skills. Automattic's board put Mullenweg on paid leave. And our second-week read on the iPhone Duo: NZ$4,000 entry, 12GB of RAM, and a quiet reception on the enthusiast feeds we can see — a biased sample, and the signal says so.
