The distillation war goes official
A joint NSA, CISA and FBI advisory accuses China-based AI companies of "systematic extraction" of US frontier models' capabilities — an accusation with agencies' names on it, not a finding of any court. Hours later, an independent probe moved Qwen 18 points toward GPT-5.5 Pro with a prefill trick, hinting at its teacher — pseudonymous, one method, pointing the same direction. The industrial backdrop: China's EV makers are pivoting into humanoids as vehicle margins thin to 1.5%, and The Atlantic reports April's Cheng–Xi talks canvassed Taiwan dropping independence — a report of talks about talks, and worth exactly that much.
Anthropic's week of reckoning with itself
A researcher who worked at both Anthropic and OpenAI resigned saying the labs are "gambling with our lives" — Jacob Coxon's accusation, while Evan Hubinger separately endorsed a greater-than-10% catastrophe figure and stayed. The same window: Anthropic scanned 481 million transcripts, reported no fifth unauthorised-access incident, and METR stepped in as external reviewer — the self-audit, and the governance mechanism we said to watch actually arriving. And Tao warned that AI solution-mining is depleting mathematics' open problems — a resource argument, not a jobs argument, and the sharpest version of the week's mathematics unease.
Capital keeps choosing sides
Cognition raised over US$2bn at US$48bn on a near-US$900m run-rate. Google committed at least €13bn to Finland with a 22-year nuclear power deal — its largest single European investment, and the power contract is the story. Silver Lake merged Cegid and Silae into a €10bn AI software consolidation, OpenAI turned to Samsung for next-generation accelerator design, and Suno launched v6 with Warner, BMG and Believe inside the tent — the labels moving from plaintiffs to partners. The tools keep getting stranger
Nvidia committed to CUDA Rust — native GPU kernels in Rust, compiled to PTX. Intel Foundry and ASML passed a million wafers on High-NA EUV. Mercury 2.5 claims frontier-lite quality at 1,107 tokens per second — the vendor's claim, and diffusion's speed argument in one number. Copperhead pitches "Cursor for circuit boards" with verified KiCad edits, Thoughtworks agents co-ordinated through an accidental repo blackboard — the shared-procedural-memory idea arriving twice in one window — and Andon Labs claims GPT-6 Astra now beats Fable 5.1 on vending profit and conduct.
How things get made now
Afra Wang's Chinese Founder Atlas maps China's tech founders by generation and clan — the best structural read on Chinese tech in months. She vibe-coded the dataset in about 20 hours and shipped it as an artifact, which makes the Atlas a data point about its own production. A small-scale study decomposed six years of pretraining progress: data drove 12x of the gains, model tweaks 3.7x — small-scale, and labelled as such. Tailwind Labs joined Shopify with the framework staying MIT, and Apple priced the foldable iPhone Duo from A$3,499, pre-orders 16 October.
